U18 Boys, Girls & Mixed Doubles, U10 Boys & Girls Singles (22/11/09)
The last HSBA tournament of 2009 saw our youngest and oldest competitors battle through the day. The U10 singles tournament was very well subscribed and a special mention must be made of six year old Jack Goode who reached the semi final of the U10 Boys singles main events and went home with a bronze medal. The under U18 tournament included singles, doubles and mixed so it was a long day for some, especially ten year old Keya Patani who, after having won the U10 girls singles trophy was pulled in to play in the U18 girls doubles event and reached the semi final main event with her partner Bethan Griffith. Many thanks once again to our merry band of helpers, especially Sangeeta Dhall, Mandy English, Alison Widdicombe and Nicky Bambrick.

288 games were played in this tournament which encompassed the U13 Boys and Girls ‘B’ singles, and U15 Boys girls and mixed doubles.
Well done to Haberdashers, Ralph Sadlier, Sherrardswood, St Albans and Sherrardswood who put in some bumper entries, and many thanks to all our helpers on the day especially to Matthew Widdicombe and Cayliegh Bambrick who did such a splendid job on the raffle. U11 Boys & Girls Doubles, U15 Boys & Girls Singles (25/01/09)
Although numbers were somewhat down compared to the same event last year, due to a number of clashes with local BE tournaments, and there only being four events, a good time was had by all. The U11 doubles were well represented by members of the county squad, plus a big entry from Norton St Nicholas, Westbury, and Lochinver House schools. The U15 singles event in the main hall saw most of the seeds coming through, and a great turn out from St Albans School who dominated the plate event (and also had the main event winner).
Full results can be downloaded HERE and detailed reports will be available in the next newsletter.
Many thanks to Graham who made his debut as tournament organiser, plus Neil English, Alison W, Ken W, Tracey Barnett, Kim Maughan AND THE RAFFLE BOYZ!!!!
U11 Boys & Girls Singles, U18 Boys & Girls Doubles and U18 Mixed Doubles (23/11/08)
Over 150 entrants braved the rain, sleet (and snow) on 23rd November to compete in the U11 singles and the U18 singles, doubles and mixed tournaments at Stevenage leisure centre. It was a long and tiring day but well worth it. Huge thanks to all our helpers, to Sangeeta for the fab dual raffle (lots of yummy prizes), to Sangeeta and Liz Hatt for running the U11 hall (by far the noisiest), to Geoff and Caz Daniels who did an admirable job on the Ashaway table, and all the others, too numerous to mention, who always just get stuck in.
Full reports are available in the Christmas HSBA newsletter and photos will be available shortly on this site.

U15 Boys & Girls Doubles, U13 Boys & Girls ‘B’ Singles and U15 Mixed Doubles (09/11/08)
Another successful HSBA tournament on 9/11/08 saw a huge turnout for the U 13"B" singles (for non county players) with a wide range of schools entering. Our usual support from Habs, Lochinver House and St Albans, and some welcome new appearences from Tring, St Edmunds, Yavneh College, Richard Hale, Goffs, Verulam and the Bishops Stortford High School. The Boys champion was James Abrams of Hitchin Boys and Shayna Godin from Dame Alice Owen.

U13 Boys & Girls Doubles, U15 Boys & Girls ‘B’ Singles and U13 Mixed Doubles (19/10/08)
An entry of over 150 boys and girls kicked off the first HSBA tournament on the 19th October. It was great to see so many of our loyal schools sending their entrants such as Haberdashers, St Albans, Dame Alice Owens, and Verulam, and also a great many more new schools represented (Ashlyns, Tring, Aldenham, Simon Balle, Hertswood, Yavneh College, Herts and Essex, Knights Templar to name a few) KEEP ON COMING.
This was very smoothly run tournament thanks to our army of helpers, with special thanks to Sangeeta Dhall, Liz Hatt, Nicky and Neil Bambrick, Ken Winchester Alison Widdicombe and our raffle ticket sellers.
Make sure you get your entries in for the next few on time!!!!!

PS Apologies to all those winners that were expecting to see their photos on the website. Due to some technical difficulties between a daughter, a camera and a PC, the photos have been lost. Badminton England Tournament Results
U17 East (Bronze and Silver Stevenage, Dec 2008)
Saturday December 6th was a very busy day at Stevenage for the Under 17 players
Prior to the event taking place several players had been sent rejection letters but we still had an entry just under 200
Each event, Boys, Girls Silver and Bronze was oversubscribed therefore only Grade 2 players could play in the Silver Events. This meant there were no easy matches; many went to a deciding third game and some took 45 minutes to complete. Badminton England’s timings allow 23 minutes for Silver matches. Therefore was no surprise that some players had very long waits and with hindsight we would have called them later.
Despite long matches and Yehlex Shuttles the tournament finished on time
There were many exciting and high quality games in both the Boys and Girls events and our congratulations go to all Herts players
Elliott Miles and Dan Hatt reached the semi-finals of the Silver Singles. Matt McCloskey and Scott Williams lost in the Silver Doubles Final. Our only girl playing in the Silver Singles, Laura Bygrave reached the quarterfinals.
In the Bronze Event, Conor Bambrick reached the quarterfinals in the Singles and with Dale Maddox lost in a very close Doubles Final. John Elms won all his games in his box and Ying Yi Tee was unfortunate to lose in a very close Bronze Singles semi-final. Well done all!
U13 East (Bronze and Silver Stevenage, Dec 2008)
Sunday December 7th and we are back in Stevenage for the U13 Silver and Bronze Open Events
Much smaller and much easier to manage than the Under 17 Tournament and all entries were accepted. However it proved to be a good tournament and it was great to see so many Hertfordshire players taking part
The Silver event is always small in the U13s and this year again was no exception, the boys bronze is always the biggest event and this year it was huge, bigger than the U17 bronze. The actual number of entries was about the same as last year but the number of girls has dropped back to the level it was a few years ago.
The U13s always get through the bronze matches very quickly, some courts turning round in ten minutes so organisers were kept very busy keeping the courts occupied
There were very good matches and Herts girls did extremely well. In the Bronze event Renu Dhall-Chopra, Rachel Ng and Philippa English reached the quarterfinals having won all their games in their boxes, Philippa English continued to play very well, reached the Final and won the Event.
The semi-final of the Bronze Doubles was an all Herts affair with Philippa English and Kayleigh Bambrick beating Zoe Taylor and Eleanor Fitton in the Final. Congratulations girls!
The boys didn't do as well as the Girls but it is important to remember some Herts boys who entered are very young and we do have Boys / Girls in the squad that are Grade 1 and are unable to enter this event. However we say well done to Jack Goode who won all his games in his box.
U13 & U17 East (Stevenage, Dec 2007)
The first weekend in December saw almost three hundred young players compete in the Badminton England Open tournament in Stevenage. The Herts Schools Badminton Association has hosted this very successful annual tournament for over 20 years. This year like others in the past saw players travelling from all around the country from as far as Yorkshire, Jersey and Devon.
The tournament is divided into two age categories, the U13 and U17 and both events were well supported by Hertfordshire players.
The Under 13’s had 27 players from the Herts county squad taking part. They all played extremely well but just one player won a medal, Anna Collis (Letchworth St Francis College) playing with her Shropshire partner collected the silver medal in the Bronze event. This was extremely good as Anna and many of the Hertfordshire players are a year younger than many of their competitors and for others it was their first experience of an Open tournament. They showed a lot of ability and determination and will benefit from the experience.
In the under 17s Hertfordshire was again well represented and the boys did very well winning medals in the Silver and Bronze events.
In the Silver event, Herts boys won Gold medals in both Singles and Doubles. In the Singles, Ryan McCarthy (Potters Bar, Chancellors) played extremely well to add another Gold medal to his collection. There were some close games but Ryan held his nerve to beat all the opposition; a great achievement as Ryan is still under 15.
The doubles pair of Arjun Shah (Harrow, Parmitters) and Ben Vranjkovic (Stevenage, John Henry Newman) surprised everyone last month (except their team manager) by reaching the final of the Silver event in Sussex. In Stevenage after several exciting matches this unseeded pair went one better and won the Gold medal, a wonderful result for them. Earlier in the day both boys played very well in the Bronze Singles event, they battled through an entry of over sixty players to meet each other across the net in the final. In a very good game Arjun beat Ben.
Other Herts players also did very well; the younger pair Scott Williams (Letchworth, Fearnhill School) and Matt McCloskey (Hitchin, Fearnhill School) reached the semi-final of the Bronze event without losing a game and only missed a place in the final by two points.
Hertfordshire Juniors are all playing extremely well and this augers well for the future. The U17 team is preparing for a weekend tournament in York, open only to the top counties. The U13 and U15 teams have both qualified for the Team Challenge Final, which takes place next year, and all three age groups remain unbeaten in the Shires league.
At all levels junior badminton is thriving in Hertfordshire with more Schools playing badminton and more players wanting to join clubs.
